2-inch, 3-inch, or canister — measure before you buy

The most common wrong purchase in toilet repair is a 2-inch flapper for a 3-inch flush valve. They look similar in the package and they are not interchangeable. Here is how to know in thirty seconds.

How to measure, in the tank, right now

  1. Shut the stop, flush, and hold the handle so the tank drains.
  2. Look at the opening in the tank floor that the flapper covers. Measure straight across the opening, not the rubber.
  3. Roughly 2 inches across → 2-inch flapper. Roughly 3 inches → 3-inch flapper. The difference is obvious once you have a tape on it: a 3-inch opening is visibly wider than a golf ball.
  4. No hinged rubber flap at all, but a tall plastic cylinder that lifts straight up → canister (Kohler Class Five and similar). The wear part is a ring-shaped seal on the bottom of that cylinder, not a flapper.
  5. A plastic tower with a rubber ring where a flapper would be → tower seal, common on some TOTO and dual-flush designs.

Measure the opening in the tank floor. Also note whether the flapper hinges on ears at the overflow tube or slides onto a ring collar — that decides which mounting style you need.

Mounting style matters as much as diameter

Two flappers can both be 2-inch and still not fit:

  • Ear mount: the flapper's arms snap onto pegs on the sides of the overflow tube. Most common.
  • Ring/collar mount: the flapper's hinge slides over a plastic collar at the base of the overflow tube. Some universal flappers include a removable ring to cover both.
  • Captive/integrated: the flapper is part of a proprietary flush valve assembly. If yours does not come off without a fight, do not force it — look up the assembly.

Why 3-inch exists

When 1.6 gpf and then 1.28 gpf became the norm, manufacturers needed a faster water dump to keep flush performance up with less water. A 3-inch valve moves the same volume out of the tank in less time than a 2-inch valve. That is also why putting the wrong flapper on a low-flow toilet produces a weak flush rather than a leak: the water leaves too slowly, or the flap closes early.

Standard 2-inch flush valves, ear or ring mount. The dial lets you tune how long the flap stays open, which is genuinely useful on a 1.6 gpf toilet that flushes weakly or uses more water than it needs.
Does not fit
3-inch flush valves, Kohler canister systems, TOTO G-Max seals, and flapperless tower toilets. If your opening measures 3 inches, this part will leak continuously no matter how you seat it.

When the flapper is not the problem — the seat

If a brand-new, correctly sized flapper still leaks the dye test, the sealing surface it lands on is damaged. Run a fingernail around the plastic or brass seat in the tank floor. What you are feeling for:

  • Mineral ridges — hard water scale. Sometimes a plastic scrub pad and a vinegar soak restores it. Never sandpaper a plastic seat.
  • Pitting or a groove — on old brass seats, from decades of chemistry and abrasion. A stick-on seat repair ring can work here and costs a few dollars.
  • Cracks or a warped rim — replace the whole flush valve. That means pulling the tank off the bowl, which also means a new tank-to-bowl gasket and bolts. At that point read the rebuild kit page, because you are already 80% of the way to a full rebuild.

Chain slack is the free fix

Half a link of slack. A tight chain holds the flapper a hair open — enough for a slow leak that refills every twenty minutes — and a long chain gets trapped under the flapper on the way down, which is the classic "it only leaks sometimes" symptom. Clip the extra chain off; don't leave it dangling.

Also worth knowing

  • Chlorine and in-tank bleach tablets shorten flapper life dramatically. If your rubber is chalky at two years, the tablet in the tank is a likely culprit.
  • Rubber flappers versus silicone: silicone tends to hold up better against chloraminated water. See hard water and chloramine.
